Description of PLA Devil Design Filament for 3D Printers

3D For You offers you the opportunity to buy PLA filament from Devil Design with a diameter of 1.75 mm and a weight of 1 kg, ensuring only positive emotions and experience from 3D printing.

PLA filament has excellent roundness and material uniformity throughout its length. Thanks to these parameters, it can be used with 3D printers that operate on FFF/FDM technology, allowing printing with 1.75 mm diameter filament and not restricted to proprietary filaments.

For printing convenience, PLA filament from Devil Design comes on spools. The product is vacuum-packed along with a moisture absorber.

  • Spool diameter: 200 mm;
  • Spool thickness: 70 mm;
  • Internal hole diameter of the spool: 52 mm;
  • Weight of empty spool: 250-260 g.

Polylactid Acid (PLA) is a biodegradable thermoplastic polymer that is produced from renewable resources such as sugarcane or corn starch.

As a result, PLA-based plastic filament for 3D printers is environmentally friendly unlike other polymers. PLA plastic is even called “green plastic”. Recently, this plastic has gained great popularity and has become a favorite among 3D printing enthusiasts.

Another positive feature of PLA filament for 3D printers is that it doesn't emit unpleasant odors during printing, making it possible to print at home or in a classroom. In addition, PLA plastic has almost no shrinkage when cooling, so a heated platform on a 3D printer is not mandatory, although it does help.

The melting temperature of the material is in the range of 180 °C — 230 °C (356 °F — 446 °F).

Properties of PLA Filament for 3D Printing

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable thermoplastic widely used in 3D printing due to its ease of use, environmental friendliness, and excellent detail resolution, making it an ideal material for various applications, from educational projects to prototyping and decorative items.

  • Ease of 3D printing, durability, strength, moderate impact resistance
  • Ideal for souvenirs, promotional products, toys, consumer goods, smooth-surfaced items
  • Fairly good stability, but PLA plastic can deform at temperatures of 55±5 °C (131±9 °F)
  • Limited flexibility, slightly brittle
  • Not soluble
  • Less durable than ABS
  • Nozzle temperature for 3D printing with PLA should be in the range of 180 °C — 230 °C (356 °F — 446 °F)
  • Practically no shrinkage when cooling
  • Heated build plate is not required but recommended for improved adhesion of initial layers
  • 3D printing difficulty — easy

PLA filament for 3D printing is not hydrophobic, so it's important to store it in a dry place in packaging with a moisture absorber.

PLA Filament Usage for 3D Printing

PLA filament experiences minimal shrinkage during cooling, making it ideal for printing objects with complex geometric shapes.

The PLA filament formula enables high-resolution 3D printing. The final product has a smooth, glossy appearance.

However, it's important to note that the softening temperature of PLA filament is only about 55±5 °C (131±9 °F), so its long-term use is only possible at low temperatures.

Due to its properties, PLA filament is perfect for 3D printing highly detailed objects.

PLA filament is eco-friendly and biodegradable. It's made from 100% bio-resources and is 100% recyclable. Its low melting temperature reduces energy consumption.

PLA filament fully decomposes in compost within one month at 80% air humidity and temperatures between 55–70 °C (131–158 °F).

However, it maintains its properties under normal conditions. It's recommended to avoid direct sunlight exposure.

Objects printed with PLA filament can be painted with acrylic paints.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about PLA

PLA is an eco-friendly material that's easy to print with. It's ideal for beginners. It's available in a wide range of colors, prints at low temperatures, and has a pleasant odor during printing. It's great for parts and models but not recommended for use in high humidity or temperature conditions.

PLA is the easiest material to print with and is ideal for beginners. It has good adhesion to the build plate and is minimally prone to distortion or warping.

PLA begins to soften at temperatures around 55-65 °C (131-149 °F). As a result, it's not recommended for objects that may be exposed to temperatures above this range.

PLA has excellent adhesion and in most cases doesn't cause problems sticking to the 3D printer's bed. The recommended bed temperature is 50 °C — 70 °C (122 °F — 158 °F). To improve adhesion, we recommend using the Spanish adhesive 3DLAC for open design printers or 3DLAC Plus for enclosed 3D printers.

PLA is one of the safest materials for 3D printing. It's made from biodegradable sources and emits a faint but pleasant odor when heated. However, it's always recommended to ensure adequate ventilation when printing with any materials.

Most modern 3D printers can print with PLA. The printing temperature for PLA is 180 °C — 230 °C (356 °F — 446 °F). Before buying PLA, make sure your 3D printer can heat the nozzle to this temperature. Furthermore, some 3D equipment developers restrict their printers from using third-party filaments. In this case, you're limited in your choice of filament.

If you're using high-quality PLA filament and regularly maintain your 3D printer, you shouldn't worry about nozzle clogging. If, for some reason, it does happen, we suggest you check out our recommendations on cleaning nozzles: How to prevent PLA, ABS, PETG filament from sticking to the 3D printer nozzle.

Layer height primarily depends on the diameter of the nozzle used. PLA is an excellent material for 3D printing and has many advantages over other materials as it's the least finicky to print with. Most beginners start printing with a layer height of at least 0.2 mm, as this allows them to get good results and avoid nozzle clogging. With experience, you can move to a 0.1 mm layer height.

Speed parameters depend on your printer's capabilities and the requirements for the final result, but for beginners, the recommended print speed is 60-80 mm/s.

Retraction parameters (speed and length) will vary greatly depending on your printer. Unfortunately, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. 3D printing enthusiasts have developed a number of test models for tuning your printer. We've collected them in this article.
