Introduction

3D printing materials have come a long way since the technology's inception. Today, there is a vast array of materials available in various forms: powders, filaments, granules, resins, and others. Many materials are designed for specific applications, possessing properties optimal for solving certain tasks. In this article, we will explore the most popular types of 3D printing materials, as well as some innovative types that deserve special attention.

Plastic

Nylon (polyamide) is widely used as a powder for Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology or as a filament for FDM/FFF technologies. It's a flexible and durable material available in various colors.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a popular plastic for 3D printing, especially for home and office FDM/FFF printers. It's strong, available in a wide range of colors, and relatively inexpensive.

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biodegradable thermoplastic gaining popularity due to its environmental properties. It can be used both as a resin for DLP/SLA processes and as filaments for FDM/FFF.

LayWood is a composite material for FDM/FFF printers, combining polymer and wood particles, allowing the creation of objects with a wood-like texture.

Metals

Metal materials are increasingly used in industrial 3D printing. The most common are aluminum, cobalt alloys, and stainless steel. Precious metals (gold, silver) are also used for jewelry production, and titanium for aerospace and medical industries.

Ceramics

Ceramic materials are a relatively new group in 3D printing. After printing, ceramic products undergo traditional processing: firing and glazing.

Paper

Standard A4 paper is used in the SDL technology developed by Mcor Technologies. This method provides cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness in 3D printing.

Biomaterials

Active research is being conducted on the use of living tissues in 3D printing for medical purposes, including the creation of organs for transplantation and tissues for body part replacement.

Food

Experimental 3D printing of food products is developing rapidly. Printing with chocolate and sugar is most common, but experiments are also conducted with other products, including pasta and meat.

Other Materials

Stratasys has developed unique "digital materials" for its Objet Connex platform, allowing the combination of standard materials during the printing process to create new composites with specified properties.

Conclusion

The diversity of materials for 3D printing is constantly growing, opening up new possibilities for various industries and applications. From traditional plastics to innovative biomaterials - each type of material has its unique properties and areas of application.
